A few kilometres from the famous coastal area are the green valleys and the wooded hills of Ste.-Baume and the Massif des Maures with waterfalls, streams and caves. Between Cannes and Frejus lies the unspoilt and outstretched natural area: Massif de Esterel.
Near the Var you will find the Gorges du Verdon, a striking landscape of mountains and gorges. At the end of the Canyon lies the beautifully situated Moustieres-Ste-Marie and just a bit further away, near Puimoisson, you will find the plateau of Valensole with the most beautiful lavender fields, almond trees and wild poppies. In the Var there are many ancient Provencal villages with narrow streets, old churches, fountains and picturesque town squares. Towns most definitely worth visiting are Seillans, Fayence, Barjols, Aups, Cotignac, Lorgues and Salernes and near St. Tropez Ramautelle, Grimaud and Gassin. In this region you will find orange and olive trees, vineyards and lavender fields and beautiful mimosa.
Golfers can play to their hearts content, as there are a lot of beautiful golf courses in the Var. And with 300 days of sunshine per year this region is one of the most attractive golfing destinations in Europe. One of the most beautiful golf courses is that of St. Endérol. The beaches of Fréjus, St. Raphaël, St. Tropez, Sainte Maxime and Les Issambres can all be recommended. Important festivals and activities take place every month, such as the Bravadas in St. Tropez in May and June. Although not in the Var, but definitely worth visiting is the nearby town of Aix-en-Provence, the historical and cultural capital of the Provence.
